We lost the great Brian Rouse recently and looking at this racing page it was a throwback to them days when Rouse rode against some of the finest jockeys around.
Obviously this will possibly not mean that much to anyone under 40 in this forum but what days they were.
Anyone got any stories about any of this jockeys listed on this racing card?.
I returned to the US in 1986, having lived in Ireland from 1968.
My recollection of Brian Rouse is limited, however, the notes
we keep in our racing brains, I listed him as a rider who could
make a low weight while having the strength in a close finish
that was the equal of many larger men. Even better than some.
Terrific jockey
Steve Cauthen was riding for Henry Cecil in the race above.
He's an American jockey that I saw little of in the US.
Like Gary Stevens after him, he rode the UK tracks very well.
I was watching racing on ITV when Cauthen had his first mount
in the UK for Robert Sangster. Horse named Marquee Universal
trained by Barry Hills was favourite in a small race at Salisbury.
Cauthen and the horse hacked up....the start of a great partnership.
He was a jockey just before my time. He disappeared for awhile in the 80s then came back in 90s
Some of my memories were
Lester Piggott jocked him off Alphabatim (After winning 2 classic trials) in the Derby. the epic(Secreto/El Gran Senor) and end up beating Piggot on a Elsworth horse who finished 3rd.
hearing Stanerra at Royal Ascot.
He was very good at Salisbury, if I recall probably with Dunlop in them days
